Travelling American roadways on a motorcycle can be an exhilarating journey but also a dangerous gamble. Luckily, as technology advances, so do advances in motor vehicle safety systems.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), modern automobiles are now coming equipped with crash avoidance technology which can help reduce the number accidents, injuries and fatalities on our roads, especially those involving motorcyclists.
Modern crash-avoidance technology includes:
- Front crash protection.Front collision avoidance systems use sensors that warn drivers of a potential collision with a vehicle ahead. A collision avoidance system may simply give the driver a warning or in some cases, engage the vehicle's automatic braking system or electronic stability control, which help the driver better control the vehicle in an emergency situation.
- Blind spot detection. Many motorcycle accidents happen when the driver of a car fails to see a motorcyclist riding in a blind spot. When a vehicle is equipped with blind spot detection, a light and tone alert the driver to an object in their blind spot.
- Lane maintenance. Lane departure warnings alert drivers if they start to drift out of their lane. Some cars also come with systems that keep the car centered in its lane or that steer the vehicle away from the edge of the lane.
Crash-avoidance tech is available for motorcycles
Anti-lock braking system (ABS) technology, a common safety feature on modern automobiles, is also available for motorcycles. The IIHS reports that ABS reduces the rate of fatal crashes by 31 percent, compared with the same motorcycles that don't have ABS. In addition, some systems are optimized for curves to give riders more stability in emergency situations.
While not all crash-avoidance systems are designed to detect motorcyclists specifically, they do save lives and prevent injuries by providing automobile drivers with additional detection and warning of collisions which may involve less visible road users, such as motorcycle riders. If you have been injured in a motorcycle accident, consult with an experienced motorcycle accident lawyer for help.
